FISHING REPORT
Anglers are reminded that the new, 19½-inch minimum keeper
length goes into effect on summer flounder May 11 in all
Delaware waters.

OCEAN
Anglers fishing the inshore wrecks and the structure on Reef Sites 10 and
11 have been reporting excellent tog fishing, but the season will be closing in a couple
of days. Newly approved tog regulations included a season closure from May 12
through June 30. The cut in the season will bring the state into line with federally
mandated harvest reductions on the species. While the tog will be off limits, reports
coming in over the past couple of weeks indicated the early arrival of black sea bass in
inshore waters including DB buoy, the Old Grounds and Reef Site II.

Surf fishermen have been scoring on scattered catches of kingfish, drum, bluefish,
stripers and flounder, but the majority of the action in the suds continues to be on
skates and dogfish. Hopefully, there will be a good spring blitz of bluefish before surf
fishermen settle into the summer doldrums. Indian River Inlet rockfish reports continue
to be dominated by catch and release action on short fish, with an occasional keeper
being caught. Most fishermen are targeting the linesiders with bucktails or plastic shad
bodies.  Summer flounder action has been very good in the back end of the inlet, Indian
River Bay and Rehoboth Bay in recent weeks, with flatties up to nine pounds being
caught by anglers fishing live minnows, squid strips, bucktails and jigs tipped with plastic
trailers. (Anglers are reminded that the new, 19½-inch minimum keeper length goes into
effect on summer flounder May 11 in all Delaware waters.)

DELAWARE BAY – Bay fishing has really started to heat up, with anglers
focusing on striped bass, flounder, and black drum. Reports of keeper rockfish have
been coming in from the areas around the 32 and 34 buoys, Joe Flogger Shoal,
Woodland Beach, Cross Ledge and Ship John, with most fishermen chunking with fresh
bunker or clams.  Flounder are just starting to move up the bay, with some of the best
fishing right now reported along the shore from Lewes to Broadkill Beach, Roosevelt
Inlet, Broadkill River and the Rehoboth-Lewes Canal.  Scattered catches of black drum
in the 15- to 25-pound range have been reported by bay anglers for a month or so, but
we didn’t hear of any real monster sized fish until last weekend when an 86-pounder
was landed at the Coral Beds off of Slaughter Beach. The best bet for drum fishing is
night fishing over hard or shell bottom with fresh clams for bait.

PONDS – The state’s public millponds are providing excellent fishing for a mix of
largemouth bass, pickerel, crappie, bluegills and catfish.  Live shiners and minnows
have been the top choices for fishermen targeting bass, pickerel and crappie, while
most of the bluegills and catfish have been hitting on night crawlers.

TIDAL RIVERS – Striped bass, white perch and channel catfish are providing
upstate anglers with excellent fishing in the tidal waters of the Delaware River, C&D
Canal and Christiana River. The perch are hitting bloodworm, while the catfish will take
night crawlers, cut bait or bloodworms. Striper season is still closed in all tidal waters
above the south Reedy Point Jetty, including the C&D Canal, Delaware River and all of
its tributaries, but the catch and release action in these areas has been very good.
Fishermen more interested in keeping a striper or two should be able to find some
action at the Pipes, Augustine Beach, the Bullpen, Sam Green’s Beach or the Yellow
Can.

NON-TIDAL STREAMS –  The spring trout stocking effort has ended in the
state’s designated trout streams, but that doesn’t mean the fish are gone.  Anglers are
still pulling trout out of  White Clay Creek, Christina Creek, Mill Creek, Pike Creek,
Wilson Run and Beaver Run, and should continue to have success through the end of
May and into June if water temperatures don’t get too warm. Fish the deeper holes with
natural baits for the best results on the stocked fish. Anglers fishing the non-tidal waters
of Brandywine Creek are starting to report improved action on smallmouth bass on a
mix of natural baits and lures.
