Delaware waters.

DELAWARE BAY -Weather remains the limiting factor for fishing in Delaware Bay, but when
conditions are favorable the striped bass action is very good. Over the weekend Blake’s Channel was
the hot spot as chunkers landed limits with fish up to 40 pounds. Tussey’s Slough and the 60-Foot
Slough also saw some good chunking action. In all cases, fresh bunker was the key to success.

Drifting with live eels or spot produced stripers at the 8s and in the Valley where dog sharks also
enjoyed these expensive baits. Trolling with Mann’s Stretch 25s caught as them well as live baits and
eliminated the dog shark problem.

Tog were caught over reef sites and wrecks with crab a good bait choice. The Outer Wall also
produced some tog on the same bait.

BLAKE’S CHANNEL Following on to a request for more information on the specific locations
mentioned in the fishing reports, this week's spot is Blake's Channel. I have not fished here since the
days of big weakfish in the bay, but right now it is a hot spot for big stripers. Blake’s Channel runs
from Reef Site 1 (LAT39 15.559 LON 75 20.689) south to 14-Foot Light (Lat 39 02.90 LON 75 11.00).
It also comes near Reef Site 2 (LAT 39 11.335 LON 75 18.379).

According to reports I received, the best striper chunking has been in the upper end of the channel
around Reef Site 1.  This area may be reached from the boat ramp at Port Mahon.

INSHORE OCEAN  -Sea bass and tog were caught in reasonable numbers from boats fishing
structure in 100 to 120 feet of water. Shorts were more common than keepers, but the ratio is
beginning to move in favor of the larger fish.

Sea bass fishing will be available all winter in deep water. Several charter boats run out of Indian
River and head boats sail from Lewes and Indian River all winter long.

OFFSHORE OCEAN -no report

INDIAN RIVER INLET -Striper action was good until Monday when I went on the inlet with
Harry Aiken. It's not the first time I have shut down a good bite and probably won’t be the last. We were
on the water by daybreak and on the trailer by 9 a.m. Harry did take a scale off of a small herring which
was a close to a bite as either of us had. One thing about being old and experienced, you know when
to quit. The water was dirty on the incoming tide and I will use this fact as an excuse.

Over the weekend we had reports of more crazy actions by a segment of the fishing community that
should never be allowed on the water.  On Monday we saw the latest incarnation of stupid behavior
with people using surf rods from the sidewalk by the Coast Guard Station. Even a poor caster can
cover half the inlet using a surf rod, and with hundreds of boats drifting the same rip conflicts will
occur. We heard of sinkers hitting boats and the ensuing conservations were X-rated. I realize longer
casts allow the angler to fish more of the rip, but please use a little common sense. Save the surf
rods for the beach.

THE SURF-  I had an unconfirmed report of some stripers caught at Cape Henlopen Sunday. The
unconfirmed bait was fresh bunker.
I planned to fish the Cape on Tuesday, but the rain that was supposed to arrive in the afternoon
showed up at 6 a.m. I don’t mind not catching fish on the surf, in fact I have become accustomed to it,
but not catching fish while shivering in a cold rain is not something I enjoy.

FRESHWATER - With the cooler weather and abundant rain most of the pond scum seen
during the summer has disappeared.  Reports indicate improved pond fishing for bass, pickerel and
crappie. Tidal creeks hold white perch and catfish along with short stripers.
The Nanticoke River and Broad Creek still have good fishing for bass and pickerel. The Spillway in
Seaford is seeing some decent crappie action.
